Arena of Fate is a free-to-play (FTP) Multiplayer Online Battle Arena action video game developed by Crytek Black Sea Studio and published by its parent company Crytek, also behind the publication of titles such as Knights of Honor, for the Microsoft Windows platform, and was announced for release on this platform in May 2014. The game was released for closed beta on August 5, 2015, and as of June 2017 is still in closed beta. No official release date for the game has been announced.
Though information surrounding the game has been obscure and limited, much has already been discovered thanks to closed beta player info and info releases from the official website.
In Arena of Fate, players take on the role of one of the playable characters available on the roster, all of whom possess weapons and abilities unique to each in every aspect along with their looks and aesthetics. However, characters share similar basic attributes based on the category or affinity they fall in. For example, some characters may have heavy damage output, but to counter that they have less durability. Other characters may be able to deal with more damage but to balance that their attack power is limited. It is up to the player to familiarize themselves with the characters and master their abilities. Since no character is overpowered in combat, players are encouraged to use strategy and planning to use their character’s strength and find a roundabout to their weaknesses.
Arena of Fate follows the standard MOBA formula in a normal game, where players are positioned at two ends of a map with varying number of lanes that connect their bases. The objective of such normal games is to destroy the enemy team’s base, but to get to the base they have to plow through defensive towers that deal heavy damage. Both sides are supported by hordes of ally AI “minions” or “creeps” that serve as a distraction for the towers and cover from enemy characters. However, Arena of Fate has several completely new elements added to the game which makes it distinct from other titles in its genre. One of these unique elements is the compulsory time limit. No match can be longer than 22 minutes. This is used as a method to encourage faster thinking and action-packed gameplay.
The most distinct one of these variations is the number of ways a match can be won. In Arena of Fate, there are three ways with which to win a match. While destroying towers and characters, points can be earned. The first of these is to destroy the enemy’s base like stated above. The second method of winning a game is to collect 10 of these points before the timer runs out. The first team to collect 10 points wins the game. Similarly, if the time limit is reached and no team has collected 10 points, then the team with the most number of points wins the game. The team that turns out the victor is awarded experience points which help level up the player.
With a unique selection of character and fast-paced gameplay, Arena of Fate is a unique MOBA. No sequels, prequels or spin-offs to the game have been announced as of June 2017.
